Why Summer Fruits and Vegetables Taste So Much Better - June 2026 News from Gut Healthy

June 2026
And why they're worth celebrating.
June is Eat Local Month, and every year I'm reminded just how special this season is. Not just because of the abundance of fresh produce, but because locally grown food simply tastes different.
When I first met my husband, vegetables weren't exactly his favourite foods. Growing up, most of the vegetables he ate came from cans or the grocery store and were overcooked. That was a very different experience from my own. I grew up on a farm, where fresh-picked vegetables were just part of everyday life. There was always something coming out of the garden or field, and I learned early on that a tomato picked at its peak or freshly dug carrots don't taste anything like their supermarket counterparts.
Over the years, my husband has come around. He may never love vegetables quite as much as I do, but he definitely enjoys them more now, and he'll be the first to admit that fresh, local produce tastes better.
There's a reason for that. Fruits and vegetables harvested close to home are often picked at their peak ripeness, allowing them to develop their full flavour and nutritional value. Instead of being picked early and trucked thousands of kilometres before spending days or even weeks in storage and on grocery store shelves, local produce can often go from farm to table in a matter of hours or days. While all fruits and vegetables are healthy choices, produce enjoyed soon after harvest tends to retain more of its vitamins and antioxidants. The difference in freshness is something you can truly taste. Strawberries actually taste like strawberries. Peas are sweet and tender. Tomatoes are juicy and fragrant. Even simple foods like lettuce and carrots seem more vibrant and satisfying.
Of course, buying locally isn't always the cheapest option, and I know it's not possible for everyone. Food budgets are real, and we all have to make choices that work for our families. But if you can afford it, farm-fresh produce is something I believe is well worth the investment. And remember, eating locally doesn't always mean shopping at a farmers' market. Growing even a little bit of your own food can be incredibly rewarding. A few pots of herbs on the windowsill, baskets of strawberries on the patio, or a cherry tomato plant soaking up the summer sun can provide fresh, flavourful produce right outside your door. There is something special about picking food you've grown yourself, and you don't need a large garden to enjoy the experience.
Having grown up on a farm, I also know that farming is not an easy life. Farmers face countless challenges every season, unpredictable weather, pests, rising costs, and the uncertainty of whether a crop will succeed. There is a tremendous amount of hard work, patience, and resilience behind every basket of berries and every bunch of carrots at the market. Supporting local growers means supporting the people who work tirelessly to bring fresh, nutritious food to our communities.
So this month, if you have the opportunity, treat yourself to some local strawberries, fresh greens, or a bunch of herbs. You might just rediscover how good vegetables can taste.
Happy summer eating!
Be well,
Peggy

August 2026 And Why It Works for Me I’ve never really liked meat. The idea of eating the muscle and tissue of another living creature has always made me shudder but I ate it because I thought I was supposed to. It was simply what people did. That changed in 2018. After a health scare, I started researching nutrition and different approaches to eating. What I learned changed the way I looked at food. And because both of my parents died from pancreatic cancer, I was especially interested in...
July 2026 Small Fruit, Big Nutrition If there's one thing I look forward to every summer, it's berry season. Whether you're picking your own, visiting the local farmers' market, or simply taking advantage of what's on sale at the grocery store, July is the perfect time to enjoy these colourful little fruits at their best. While all berries are packed with nutrition, each variety brings something unique to the table. Strawberries are one of the best sources of vitamin C, providing more than...
May 2026 Lifespan vs. Healthspan Most of us want to live a long life. We try to eat well, move our bodies, get enough sleep, and manage stress because we know these habits support our health. But when you think about it, is living longer really the goal? What most of us truly want is to feel good for as many years as possible, to stay active, independent, mentally sharp, and able to enjoy life. That’s where the idea of healthspan comes in. Over the past few years, there’s been a growing focus...
